An organic garden is a complex ecosystem that not only encompasses plants and soil but also all of the creatures that inhabit the garden. Birds are welcome visitors not only because of their beautiful feathers and glorious songs, but also because they eat many of the harmful insects that attack our plants.
The best way to attract and keep birds in your yard is to offer them water. The easiest way to do that is to have a birdbath! At Natureworks, we offer birdbaths in all shapes and sizes, made of many different materials. From cast stone to glazed ceramic to metal, the styles that we carry will grace your garden for years to come.

Birds need water not only to drink. They also “bathe” to keep their feathers clean and groomed, which helps them to fly! Have you ever watched birds frolicking in a birdbath? They are spraying water all over their feathers. Later, they fly to a safe perch to groom themselves. That is why, when deciding where to place your bird bath, consider planting dense or thorny shrubs nearby.
Some of our birdbaths are also self-contained fountains. Moving water attracts hummingbirds who flit through the water, a joy to witness!
Keep your bird bath clean by hosing it out and changing the water every few days. Never use bleach or other cleansers as birds are very sensitive to chemicals. At Natureworks, we scrub our birdbaths with a stiff brush occasionally.
Winter care of your bird bath:
- Birdbaths made of concrete, cast stone, or glazed ceramic cannot be left out in the winter unless you add a bird bath heater. Water that freezes and thaws in these types of bird baths will crack the tops, making them unusable for holding water. Bring in the top or turn it over during the freezing cold months of winter.
