What a weekend! Saturday and Sunday we celebrated our 31st Open House. Neither rain nor cold weather discouraged loyal Natureworks customers from visiting. Perhaps Jane’s amazing cookies had something to do with it? We had a blast! I made bow after bow, wreath after wreath until my hands couldn’t move any more. Then what did I do on my day off? I made my own gigantic wreath for the front of my house, complete with lights on a timer AND I put up my tree in the living room. Lights are on, ornaments will be hung this week. It’s time to get serious about decking the halls, that’s for sure. As I pulled out my vintage Christmas linens and hand made stockings given to us as a wedding gift, I realized once again how meaningful this time of year can be if you enjoy the process and treasure the traditions that you have built in your life.
Mini arrangements make the perfect gift for teachers, co-workers, and grab bags. Visiting neighbors? These are sweet hostess gifts as well. We make them daily, and will continue to do so until the teeny tiny containers are all gone! You can place an order and we will have them ready for you.
“This is my mom’s happy place.” “This is my sanctuary.”. “It smells so good in here.” These are just a few of the comments I heard last week. We LOVE having a store that people find rejuvenating. Of course it smells good when you walk in the door- we are using tons of fresh cut, real greenery. Last week I got my hands on a truck load of concolor fir. I have been dreaming of making wreaths and arrangements with this aromatic evergreen for years. It smells like tangerines and lasts for weeks and weeks.
Greens behind the scene being processed for our retail bins.
bove you will see a picture of Jillian and Mack processing giant piles of greenery that had just been harvested by our landscape crew. First they cut it up, then they bundle it, then they dip it in WiltPruf, then they lay it out to dry, and only thendo they restock the greens bins. Mack is working on ‘Boulevard’ cypress; Jillian is processing holly and boxwood, all harvested within a few miles of here.
As a designer, I am constantly inspired by all of the different textures, colors, and forms of this beautiful greenery. Fresh, unusual greenery makes our creations so unique and special. The countdown begins-we are open for another 14 days! We now close at 5 pm onDecember 23rd so we can all enjoy Christmas Eve day with our families. I married an Italian man, so I don’t have to tell you what I will be doing! Are you going to go through Natureworks withdrawal? Avoid the weekend rush and make plans now to enjoy one of our Thursday evenings coming up- shopping by twinkling lights, enjoying a glass of wine in the process. Stock up on our all-natural ice melt by using the couponbelow. With mornings like we had on Tuesday, it makes sense to have this excellent, safe, and competitively priced product on hand. I was flinging it out the door ahead of my on the back steps before I even ventured outside in the ice storm that confronted me. Treat yourself to some houseplants, a good book to read by the fire, sprouts and microgreens to make your winter healthier. Grab on to our Gardening by the Moon calenders before they are sold out for the season. We even have discount CT Flower and Garden Show tickets that make great stocking stuffers.
Our hellebores are moving into the greenhouse for the last two weeks of our season. They are filled with flower buds that will open to beautiful blooms that can grace your holiday sideboard. It is so simple to then move them to the garage in January and plant them in the spring. You can never have too many hellebores in the early spring garden, believe me! The hellebores will join lemon scented indoor cypress trees, a nice selection of unusual poinsettias, and a terrific stock of miniature and terrarium plants in our greenhouse behind the shop. You will find a wide array of beautiful, hand crafted terrariums throughout our retail store. The possibilities for very special gifts are endless in our little patch of paradise here on Rt. 22. I hope you can plan a visit this week and rejuvenate your spirit at Natureworks.
See you soon…
